Abstract

Alexithymia shows both cognitive and affective deficits in how to recognize and communicate an individual’s emotional state. Cognitively, individuals with alexithymia use concrete and practical thinking styles, and affectively, they show diminished and indistinguishable emotional awareness. Individ-uals who experience alexithymia avoid intimate interpersonal relationships, such as relationships or marriage. Meanwhile interpersonal relationships re-quire varying emotional involvement, for individuals who experience alexy-thimia, it is difficult. The aim of this study was to determine whether there was a relationship between alexithymia and close relationships in early adult-hood. This study uses a quantitative approach with correlational methods; data collection using the Alexithymia questionnaire and the Close Relation-ship questionnaire. The subjects of this study were 30 early adults from sev-eral hospital environments in East Jakarta, both patients and hospital work-ers. Two-way (2-tailed) testing with a 0.01 level of significance (1%) gets the correlation result of -0.199. This means that there is a significant relationship with a negative direction, namely the higher of alexithymia tendency, the lower of close relationship with other individuals
