Abstract

Basil is one of the plants that grows in the plains of Asia and America which contains an anti-bacterial substance that is 2,6-octadiene-1,8-diol. So far, basil, as a vegetable, is used more as fresh vegetables, this of course makes the economic value of basil leaves not optimal. This study aims to discuss the effect of temperature and type of solvents in basil leaf extraction by reflux extraction method. The dried and mashed basil leaves were extracted by reflux method using ethanol and hexane solvents which were able to dissolve the active substance 2,6-octadiene-1,8-diol contained in basil leaves. The temperature variations used in this study were 50, 60, and 70oC. The extraction results were then analyzed using Gas Chromatography to determine the quantity of the active substance that was successfully extracted. The best results were obtained with ethanol solvent at a temperature of 70 oC, and extraction time of 180 minutes where the yield was 50.7%.
